Hereward Lester Cooke (1916-1973) was an American artist, curator and author. He studied at Harrow in England, Oxford University, Art Students League in NY, Yale School of Fine Art, a Fulbright fellow at the Sorbonne, and received his Ph.D at Princeton Graduate School for Art and Archeology. He was named artist-in-residence at Princeton for four years.

 

He was a curator at the National Gallery of Art (1961-1973), overseeing the European and American painting collections. A well-known established authority on fakes and forgeries, he led the Gallery's Expert Opinion service where art owners had their art appraised and/or identified. He was NASA's art advisor for ten years and selected artists for the Environmental Protection Agency art programs. He was director of the American pavilion at the Venice Biannual International Art Exhibition. He won the Prix de Rome and the Order of Merit by the Italian Government. In 1940 he won the American Beaux Arts prize for murals. Today, his artwork is displayed in American and European museums. He was also a WW II pilot and combat intelligence specialist in the Army Air Forces, he received a Bronze Star and the Air Medal. As a Curator and Interior Designer, these are the storied 6615 N.
